Englischsprachiges Originalinterview

KosheenAfter releasing your first two records it took a very long time to produce your last album – (round) about 4 years. Why? Did you need a time out?
We did need a time out, we have been touring and writing constantly from the first album and I think everyone was feeling exhausted. Our 4th album won’t take as long, hopefully.

Would you describe sound and topic of the 14 tracks from „Damage”for us? Typical Kosheen -sound in combination with gloomy lyrics?
It’s always difficult to describe your own sound; I suppose that’s best left to the listener and how they interpret it. Our music has been called a lot of things, good and bad.

Are the gloomy lyrics the result of negative experiences or what do you want to communicate to us?
I don’t actually write the lyrics, but I think a lot of Sians lyrics reflect her life and personal experiences.

„Overkill”was your first single-release. What is this track about, what is the story behind it?
Again, you’d have to ask Sian that. From what I can gather it’s about a failed relationship.

KosheenYou disassociated yourself from your Label BMG after your first two records and changed to Universal. Why? Did BMG lose confidence in you?
We departed BMG when they merged with Sony. A lot of the people we were working with at BMG left and it was difficult to get across our ideas for the next album. BMG are a great label and we had a great time there with our first 2 albums. Now we’re looking forward to releasing with Universal.

Everybody of you has his/her own differing musical roots. From rock and punk to drum´n´bass and finally to rave. How do find to a common denominator and how does it become a Kosheen-Track?
Between me, Markee and Sian, we have so many musical influences. Lots of them find their way into our tracks, we don’t think of something specific and write a track around it, it just evolves. That’s mostly how we write.

What is everybody’s role when recording new songs? Who brings what into the tracks?
Normally Markee and I will be working on sketches then pass them onto Sian, she’ll get some ideas and then we take it from there. Its goes back and forth a few times until Markee and I mix it down.

Which “club-suitable/-fit” remixes will be released by well known DJ´s and producers this time?
We’ve gone for more underground remixes this time around. We didn’t want a big DJ to come in and remix any of the tunes. Komanasmuk has just put in a great dub step remix which everyone is into.

What is the intention of the name „Kosheen”. Does it have a certain meaning?
We make the name up. It means us.

Please describe your music and your personal style in your own words for us.
Unpredictable, dark, rolling, consistent, BASS!!

You are from Bristol just as other bands like Portis Head, Massive Attack and so on. In your opinion, what is the reason for your town to be such a stronghold for distinct and creative sounds?
We’ve been asked this question so many times and every time I have the same answer, which is simply ‘I don’t know’.

Describe your live-performances for us. How do you transfer all these elements and energy during a concert to the stage?
When creating music like ours, which involves working with a lot of sequencing and electronics it can be difficult to convert that to a live performance. Over time we’ve created a balance between what’s played live and what’s sequenced – which comes across well.
